IMN has developed a resource to support community workers lead creative activities for children, young people and families underpinned by opportunities to engage with low-stakes literacy. The resource can be explored in different ways and can be used to develop a weekly block of activities (e.g. 8 sessions) culminating in an exhibition, or to support individual one-off taster activities.
It has been developed as a collaborative project between Matt Gillies (Illustrator/ Art & Design Lecturer) and Tessa McGinness (Illustrator/ Community Educator) and the Intergenerational Mentoring Network supported by former Professor and literacy expert Sue Ellis. Activities are designed to be low cost, fun and accessible.
It builds on our previous resource Learning Together for family-workers funded by the Scottish Government and developed in partnership with Barnardo’s to support family workers to devise literacy-rich activities.
Thank you to the funders Youth Link Scotland Grants Programme and to the children, families and family workers from CLD Clackmannanshire, F.A.R.E. Easterhouse and Stepping Stones for Glasgow. We hope other family and youth workers find some ideas and inspiration that they can take forward in their practice.
